MEETING: Studio 2: 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm
● Tues August 27th
WHY AM I RECEIVING THIS?
O’Shea Irish Dance trains and competes regularly in our Regional (November) and National (July)
championships. You are receiving this document because Cormac and Natalie have determined that
your child is ready to participate in one of our competitive teams. We set our teams in the fall (August) of the year in anticipation of Regionals (Oireachtas) held in
November AND also with a view toward placement for Nationals in July as well. Worlds championship
team placement in Dublin 2020 will also be an option for some of our experienced teams. We will ask
about all three events in the FORM at the end.
WHAT IS THIS “OIREACHTAS” EVENT?
The Oireachtas (ah-ROCK-tus) is the Regional Championship for the Mid-America Region,
represented by the IDTAMA (Irish Dance Teachers of Mid America). It is one of 5 regions in the US,
covering 14 states from Ohio to the Dakotas & from Missouri to Minnesota. It is a qualifying event for
National and World Championships.
WHAT IS MY INVITATION FOR?
We are inviting your dancer to consider doing a team competition with OID. This is the primary part of this
invitation but your dancer will have an opportunity to dance in one other competition at Oireachtas
depending on their age, skills, and competition level (Beginner, Novice, Prizewinner, Preliminary
Champion (PC) or Open Champion (OC).
● TEAMS: Team dances range in age groups U8; U10; U12; U15; U18, O18 for girls teams, and
U8; U10; U12; U15, O15 for Mixed. Age is defined like a feis age, by a dancer’s age at 12:00am
on January 1. Team members are chosen by teachers. Participation of a school team for each
age group at Oireachtas qualifies that school for participation in the National &/or World
Championships. We do try to place dancers in our “A” Teams for BOTH Regionals and Nationals.
(Worlds are not a requirement for any Oireachtas participants; just a possibility on the years that it
works & for the teams that are able.)
● TRADITIONAL SETS: There are Traditional Set competitions at the Oireachtas only (not offered
at Nationals or Worlds) which are open to dancers in all ages & levels who are participating in
teams but do not yet qualify for solos. A traditional set is a common choreography of Irish dance
to a specific tune, known worldwide, as opposed to the teacher-choreographed steps that the
soloists use. It is added by most team dancers as a fun bonus.
● SOLOS: Regional Qualification is required for solo dancers U8 through adults to be eligible for
this event. Solo qualification at Oireachtas is obtained four ways; 1. OC dancer; 2. PC dancer that
has placed at least once in the top 50% (Oct 1 to Sept 30); 3. U8 to U10 dancer – teacher
placement (teacher decides to have them dance); 4. U11 to U13 prizewinner dancer with at least
one first, second or third place in all dances (reel, slip jig, treble jig, hornpipe) between (Oct 1 and
If you have any questions about what level your dancer is at or what competitions she/he would compete
at Regionals (Oireachtas) or Nationals please contact Cormac or Natalie

*Preparation Events are also required for training; please see below.
WHAT ATTENDANCE IS REQUIRED TO PARTICIPATE?
This is the big one. There are great difficulties that absences present for everyone involved. Please
understand that any classes missed don’t affect the dancer missing them as much as the dancers who
actually attend and don’t have a full team to rehearse with.
A maximum of three TOTAL absences from regular practice will be allowed if submitted in
advance, with the accompanying form. For school events that are not yet scheduled, an absence
may be considered excused if received by Cormac IN WRITING AT LEAST 30 DAYS IN ADVANCE.
!!These excused absences cannot occur during the month of November!!
We need to be firm with this. Unplanned absences during November have been one of the most difficult
elements of practicing teams. If missing from class, you may be dropped from the event & replaced.
Lack of commitment to these rehearsals may affect your opportunities for placement in a team for the
current competition and for the future.
The first ALL-teams Informational meeting (for parents and dancers) will take place during Ceili

and parents are invited and encouraged to attend, socialize with other parents (BYOB!), be a
responsive audience, and even videotape your dancers.
Again, Mock Oireachtas is MANDATORY – no exceptions will be made for this date. This is an
